Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy forms part of the interdisciplinary management of patients under the care of the NSIC and has a role in the acute care, rehabilitation, re-admission, follow up, education and paediatric services. Modalities include:
- Respiratory techniques and interventions.
- Joint management including:
- Joint mobility
- Splinting
- Muscle strengthening
- Re-education
- Pain management including:
- Acupuncture
- Musculo-skeletal skills
- Hydrotherapy
- Sports Therapy
- Rehabilitation including:
- Balance training
- Transfers
- Wheelchair skills training
- Gait re-education including:
- Functional electrical stimulation
- Partial body weight support treadmill training
- Orthotics assessment and prescription
- Posture and seating reviews
- Community liaison and visits
- On going assessment and review
The physiotherapy service organises the NSIC team participating in the annual Inter Spinal Unit Games, enabling patients to try a variety of sporting activities, participate competitively as well as meet and learn from elite disabled athletes.
The physiotherapy service organises training events for physiotherapists and other MDT members involved in managing spinal cord injured patients outside of the specialised SCI setting. Courses include:
- Wheelchair Masterclass
- Acute management
- Rehabilitation
