Respiratory Ventilation
At the NSIC we provide a full respiratory support service for patients who require invasive (through a tracheostomy) and non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Our patients who arrive ventilated are either rehabilitated and discharged as permanent or part time ventilator users, or weaned from the ventilator if they are able to breathe independently. We use a multi-disciplinary team approach to the rehabilitation of ventilated patients, which includes the education of outside care agencies, district nurses and caregivers on all aspects of ventilator and tracheostomy care.
Our non invasive service includes the use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (biPAP) to support patients during the acute phase of injury and if needed, during rehabilitation.
