Spinal Surgery
The NSIC offers access to both newly injured adults requiring spinal surgery and those spinal cord injured patients who need further surgical intervention during the course of their lives. Newly injured patients may be admitted directly to St Andrew's, our 20 bed acute ward or, where patients require more intensive care, they may first send time in the hospital intensive care unit, (ICU). St Andrew's offers up to 4 acute ventilated beds. Patients coming back to the Centre for further spinal surgery are admitted to St Patrick's, the 24 bed re-admission ward. Treatments provided include:
- Conservative and surgical management of injuries to all regions of the spine, with neurological deficit present or imminent. Link ‘Goals, timing and methods for surgical treatment of the vertebral injury in SCI’.
- Surgical correction and stabilisation of congenital and chronic spinal deformities and instabilities.
- Bone and soft tissue surgery for improved mobility of joints.
